Scarperia, the town of knives

A pearl set in a region rich in history, art, and culture.
This is how we can define the Mugello area, happily set in the sweet landscape of the Tuscan hills. The area is situated near the Appennine and presents such different surroundings and aspects that go from the sharp beauty of the higher areas to the hundred villages of the Sieve Valley.
It is a varied territory still uncontaminated in a great part, rich in history, culture and art. Here we can find traces of a history worth of a big European city.
It is just enough remembering some noble Medieval families, the Guidi and the Ubaldini, who soon entered in competition with Florence and wanted to build "new lands" (one of these was in fact Scarperia). Many world famous artists like Giotto, Beato Angelico, Andrea del Castagno were born here and here they developed their talent.
The Medici family has its origin here and in fact it left numerous signs on the territory which demonstrate the bond that existed between the political and territorial expansion and the forms of artistic expression. In this sense, Scarperia sums up all this: there are direct structural witnesses of great charm and impact like the "Palazzo dei Vicari" and the great art and craft tradition of blades and knives which has made the new Medicean land founded on "die octo" (1306) famous all over the world since the 15th century, also thanks to the Giogo road which then passed through the inhabited village.
It is a tradition which continues thanks to the ability of the local cutlers and which emerges at the Exhibition Market for cutting tools (the first fortnight of June).
The relationship between tradition and progress completes with the presence of sport facilities of international value on the territory: besides the Race Track, we find Bilancino Lake, future centre of National Sailing and Canoeing Events, the 18 holes at the Golf Club "Poggio dei Medici" which is home of the Ladies' European Tour and a constitutive element for a possible "sport valley" sinces within a few kilometres there are facilities of great charm which match so well with the vocation of the territory.
Throughout the year cultural shows and fairs will make you enjoy your stay.
Scarperia hosts many cultural activities such as the Diotto (Die-Octo) which takes place in September in remembrance of the town's foundation in 1306. The most important part of this day is its
  • procession which revokes daily Renaissance life with ladies and gentlemen dressed in medieval costumes,
  • banner wavers, knights and games in the square.

On the last Sunday of May the town holds its Infiorata, carried out by the townspeople, when the main street is covered with petals, each year dedicated to a different thema. You will able to walk or ride in one of the most peaceful and pleasant countrysides of Mugello Valley.
You will have the opportunity to pay an intersting visit to the many historical and cultural sites: the Palace of Vicari, the "Oratorio della Madonna del Vivaio" in Scarperia, Monastery of "Borao ai Frati", Fortezza dei Medici, Cafaggiolo and Maschere castle in the neighbourhood.
A visit could be paid also to the native house of Giotto, which is nowadays a rich museum.
